Throughout February I have been reading This Is Going To Hurt by Adam Kay. Carrying on with the medical autobiographies, this one is written by a doctor who talks about his experiences on the medical front line. These stories are funny, eye-opening and slightly sad but all are written in a wonderfully comedic manner.
Adam Kay discusses the real life goings on that occurred during his time working for the NHS. All patients names are changed to keep them anonymous but the stories are very much real. He talks about the various things people go to A and E for, including the various objects people need removing from their rectum! The photo below isn't from Adam's stories but has been featured in the news previously. This buzz certainly went to infinity and beyond.

I don't have a lot of time to read so the writing style of this book fitted perfectly with my lifestyle. The book is written as diary entries, the longest being a couple of pages long, so makes it ideal to read in short bursts. I know it isn't for everyone and I don't normally like these types of books but once I saw others recommend it, I soon picked it up and I was eagerly reading. I found my lunch break was the ideal time to sit and read a little bit each day.
This book makes you laugh (a lot) but also opens your eyes to the downsides of working for the NHS. The hours are long, almost never ending, and the wages are so low the parking meters earn more than the doctors. Despite this, it is a very uplifting book that will make you laugh at the craziness that seems to be the life of a junior doctor.

If you are looking for a new book to give a try, I highly recommend this one for anyone looking for a lighthearted easy read.
And don't forget to smile! x
