I have just finished watching After Life on Netflix and I loved it. It wasn't the most uplifting series of choice by far but I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing.

The series follows Ricky Gervais's character, Tony, and how he sees life after losing his wife, Lisa, to cancer. He talks about his mental state to the different people in his life, even if they don't want to here it. He goes from such a care free, happy man to an extremely dark place once his wife has gone and who can blame him really. He has lost the most important person in his life and that is enough to push anyone to the edge.
Mental health is still so taboo so I think it is wonderful to see a show be so upfront about it and not shy away from the topic. We need to talk about out mental health more. So many people, if not everyone, will go through some darker times in their life and the only way to get through it is to acknowledge it and ask for help if you can. There will always be someone there to help you when you need it.
You see the couple in flashbacks at their best, enjoying time together mucking around and having a laugh. You can't help but fall in love with the characters which makes watching so hard as you feel like you're losing Lisa as well as watching the old Tony disappear. You will shed a tear or two, I know I did.
I wanted to share this series as recently I know all to well that mental health can be a struggle, either for yourself or for the people around you. And there is no shame in asking for help, in fact there is braveness. I started writing something on a bad day about a week back and wanted to document it. I know this is supposed to be a positive place but these things are important to acknowledge.
I felt like I was drowning and couldn't do anything to help myself. I couldn't shout for help because I didn't know how. And even if I could, I didn't know who to call out to. Do you ever have so much going on in your head that it gets too much? You can no longer contain it and it starts to seep out into physical pain and random bursts of emotion.
I highly recommend this show to anyone and everyone. It is so heartbreaking but at the last moments when you think there is nothing but darkness in Tony's mind, he surprises you. It is very real and eye-opening and a wonderful watch.
And don't forget to smile! x
