Recently I have (finally) finished Noel Fitzpatrick's autobiography and wanted to share my thoughts on it.
I am sure most people know who Noel is. He is better know as The Supervet for creating incredible fracture repair and spinal operations seen on TV that have saved many an animals life. He is always doing the impossible and proving how advanced veterinary medicine is.

Noel is a neuro-orthopaedic specialist meaning he is able to understand nerves and bones and think up these wonderful life-changing surgeries. He also works hard towards an idea called One Medicine. This is where, in an ideal world, humans and animals are seen and treated as equals. No human treatment should be obtained where an animal is hurt in order to obtain the answers. One Medicine is working towards human and animal medicine coming together to achieve brilliant ideas and surgeries.

As a SVN, I found his book very interesting as he talks about the surgeries he undertakes and conditions seen in his patients so I felt I learnt a lot. He also talks about his upbringing and what made him want to become a vet in the first place, as well as cases he has treated. There are even photographs within the book which are all very interesting and funny stories from his career as a large animal vet. He even left his glasses inside a cow during a caesarean!
There are many lovely quotes in the book including one where Noel refers to vet nurses at 'the lifeblood of companion animal veterinary practice'. Cheers Noel, I feel flattered!

One of the many quotes I fell in love with when reading this book is 'people don't care what you know until they know that you care'. This is very true. You can be the best vet or nurse on the planet but if you don't show an owner you care about them and their animal, they won't want to stick around very long. We pride ourselves with our ability to care, that's why most of us chose the industry.
The quote below also sums up perfectly why we do this job. It can be stressful (see previous post) and extremely testing at times but we do it because we love our animals.

I would strongly recommend this book if you loved watching The Supervet TV show or if you want an insight into the life of a referral practice or a specialist surgeon. Noel has some great stories to tell.
And don't forget to smile! x
